Introduction to Safe Towing – B+E

Welcome to the Introduction to Safe Towing online course 

This course will help you prepare for any practical on and off-road training, as well as help, increase your towing knowledge in general – helping you in turn become more confident, competent and safer at towing.
It introduces a new scheme to monitor the safety aspect of towing large trailers in the Category B driving licence sector.
The following course is based on four key modules, as set out by the DVSA B+E syllabus:

  1. Preparing the vehicle, trailer and its contents for daily use
  2. Drive the vehicle, whilst towing, in accordance with The Highway Code and regulations
  3. Reverse the trailer, coupling and uncoupling
  4. Drive safely and efficiently

The following course is set into ‘the six areas of expertise for towing’ that integrate with the modules to complete the DVSA Safe Towing Scheme objectives.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to fulfil the training needs for those wishing to tow trailers (up to 3500kgs) behind a suitable car or van. The course includes such trailers as:

  • Flatbeds/low loaders
  • Bowsers
  • Horseboxes/animal pens
  • Caravans
  • Plant

There is no minimum or maximum amount of guided hours of learning, hence the accreditation may be attained at the candidate’s own pace and style of learning.

How does the online course work?

It is set into six short introductory learning sessions, followed by a multiple-choice theory assessment (that is not pass or fail, it’s simply designed to gauge what you have learned and build on that in further training).
